Two Hundred Steps of Ryojo
The city of Kure is famous for its steep and hilly terrain, a result of having very little flat land. Much of the limited flat ground was used by the Imperial Japanese Navy as military bases, leaving citizens to build their homes on the hillsides. The “Two Hundred Steps” in the Ryojo district were built as a vital path for residents to navigate their daily lives on these slopes. Many of the Navy’s officers also resided in this area.
